Join the Sahara virtual balloon race

Try something a bit different this summer and join us in a virtual balloon race across the Sahara Desert!

From only £3 you can design and compete in an eco-friendly virtual balloon race and, from the comfort of your own home, you could sail through the skies with friends, family and colleagues and raise vital funds for your local hospice.

Why not buy a balloon as a gift for a loved one that you are unable to be with at this moment in time and follow the balloon on its journey together?

Join us and a host of other charities across the UK for the virtual race which takes place over seven days from Saturday 8 August across the Sahara Desert.

Your balloon will challenge all the other balloons to travel the furthest in seven days and you could be the lucky winner of one of the following prizes:

1st Prize – £500

2nd Prize – Apple iPad

3rd Prize – Ten winners of a £10 book token

What is a virtual balloon race?

The race is as real as it can get as the balloons are affected by the actual weather conditions over the seven days but they only fly high in the sky virtually and in our imagination, so your eco-friendly balloon simply disappears upon completing its journey, wherever that may be.

Once your virtual balloon has been “released” over the Sahara Desert, you can follow its progress on Google Maps and see how it fairs against the elements.

How do I take part?

It is super easy to join in and fun to take part in the virtual balloon race and it only takes a few steps. It is an opportunity to learn and teach geography, aerodynamics and put your design skills to the test.

To buy your balloon follow these simple steps:

1) Follow the link at below to find out more and buy your balloon

2) Click ‘Buy Balloons’

3) Sign in or create an account

4) Pick how many balloons you would like to enter or give as a gift, birthday present or just for a bit of fun.

5) Here comes the best bit; you design your balloon’s colour, pattern, helium contents and rubber thickness – make sure you label it too. All these elements will effect how it flies through the air so choose wisely.

Congratulations! You have now entered and you can wait for the big race and track it’s progress over the seven day race.

What is a virtual balloon race?

The race is as real as possible, as the balloons are affected by the actual weather conditions over the seven days. Once your virtual balloon has been 'released', you can follow its progress on Google Maps and see how it fairs against the elements. The race will feature balloons from a number of charities, all competing to see whose will get the furthest.

Where does the money go?

From each £3 balloon Prospect Hospice will receive £2.38. For every eleven balloons that are bought, it will cover the average cost of a nurse’s fuel per day to visit patients homes.

Who can take part in this event?

This virtual event is open for everybody to enjoy so families, friends and colleagues can all get involved! If you are under 18, you must get your parent or guardian to purchase a balloon for you.

When does the race start?

The race starts at midday on Saturday 8 August, when all the balloons will be ‘released’ over the Sahara Desert.

What could I win?

Your balloon will challenge all the other balloons to travel the furthest in seven days and you could be the lucky winner of one of the following prizes: • 1st Prize - £500 • 2nd Prize- Apple iPad • 3rd Prize- 10 X £10 book vouchers

How do I watch the launch and track my balloon in flight?

Once the balloons are virtually launched (see launch sequence on the Eco Racing homepage (www.ecoracing.co), they are subject to a simulated flight pattern based on the actual weather conditions such as the prevailing wind speed and current temperature. This simulation uses an advanced computer-modelling programme linked to Google maps and a commercial weather data supplier, Aeris. By clicking on ‘balloons’ on the race homepage, you will see the leading 100 balloons listed. The information shows straight line distance travelled in kilometres from the launch point, plus the balloon’s latitude and longitude.

Can I raise further funds for Prospect Hospice through the balloon race?

Of course, the best thing you can do is tell your friends, family and colleagues and ask them whether they would like to join the race.

Who runs the event?

The event is run by Eco-racing and Prospect Hospice is taking part in a joint race with other charities on Saturday 8 August, however your balloon funds will go towards Prospect Hospice.

Hints and tips from Eco-Racing…

Enhance your chances of winning: When you have created an account and bought balloons for Prospect Hospice, you can link through to your personal dashboard. On the dashboard you can ‘customise’ each balloon by changing various parameters of the balloon size, shape and composition to enhance your chances of winning. Reflecting real life, virtual balloons just like latex ones, can pop if the balloon parameters are not suited to the weather. For example, maximising helium content in stormy weather is not advised, so looking at the predicted weather for your race period prior to customisation helps your chances of winning. Have fun decorating your balloon: Lots more fun can be had decorating your balloon with all sorts of colours, patterns, and a personalised message. Remember that you can return back to your dashboard and change elements of your balloon or redecorate as often as you like right up to a race launch time and date.
