FAQs

Can I write my own will?

Yes, although some off-the-shelf will making kits are not checked. One simple error can invalidate your entire will, so we recommend that you employ a solicitor to do the work.

Should I inform the Prospect Hospice that I intend to remember them in my will?

Legacy income forms a major part of the funds received by the charity each year. We appreciate that it is a very private decision, but knowing we can rely on a gift in your will in the years to come helps us to make effective plans now to provide our care in the future.  Knowing you have made this special gesture for us would mean that we may have the opportunity to thank you properly in your lifetime.

I would like to leave all or part of my estate to the Prospect Hospice, what wording should I use in my will?

This is referred to as a residuary legacy. Some useful wording: “I give the sum of ........... to the charity known as Prospect Hospice (charity number 280093) absolutely for its general purposes and I direct that the receipt of the treasurer or other authorised officer of the said Charity shall be sufficient discharge to my executors.”

I would like donations at my funeral in lieu of flowers to be for Prospect Hospice. How do I ensure that this happens?

Simply ask your solicitor to include your wishes in your will. Suggested wording: “I request my executor to ensure that instead of flowers at my funeral donations are made to the charity known as Prospect Hospice (charity number 280093).

Further information on how family and friends can make In Memoriam gifts can be found on the In Memoriam pages of the website.

I would like to leave a fixed sum of money in my will, how do I do this?

This is referred to as a pecuniary legacy. Suggested wording: “I give the residue (or ........... percent of the residue) of my estate to the charity known as Prospect Hospice (charity number 280093) absolutely and for its general purposes and I direct that the receipt of the treasurer or other authorised officer shall be full and sufficient discharge to my executors.”

What are the tax advantages of leaving money to charity?

Legacies to registered charities are exempt from inheritance tax. In certain circumstances especially with larger estates a charitable bequest can be a useful way to avoid the payment of inheritance tax on some or all of your estate.
